Drill bits are precision-cut cutting tools employed to remove material from a drilled hole, usually of cross-section, to make holes. Drill bits may be of various shapes and sizes and are used to produce various types of holes in a variety of materials. They are available in a variety of models suited for specific drilling purposes. Here are some of the most common drill bits:
Wood Boring. Wood boring drill bits are a special type of bits that are used in boring holes into wood. A wood boring bit is designed with a tapered point to bore accurately into hardwood. Wood boring bits are of various types and the most common one used in the USA is a tapered wood boring bit.
Rubber Drills. Rubber drill bits are used mainly for drilling plastic materials, as its larger size allows it to drill into various shapes without jamming or leaving unwanted gaps. Rubber drill bits are of different types and sizes and are made of rubber-based compounds that offer a high amount of gripping force. There are also a number of different types of rubber drill bits available such as cross-bite, anti-rotate, twisting, and others. Some of these bits have a threaded fastening attachment, while others are provided with an optional tip sleeve.
Metal Drills. Metal drill bits are those with a tapered, counter-clockwise rotation head that has a tapered shank that is made from either steel or aluminum. The shank is primarily used as a mounting base for drill bits, and the rotating bit revolves around the shank when drilling. They are often supplied in different sizes to suit different hole patterns and are designed to withstand heat.
Flute Length Drills. Flute length drill bits are one of the most popular types of drill bits, as they offer a very large bore diameter. Generally, these types of drill bits consist of two pieces which are secured on one end by a screw. The screw is inserted into the drilled hole and the holes are thereafter widened. These types of drill bits are commonly used in standard or metric holes.
Screws and Lamp Bolts. Lamp bolts and screw threads are another commonly used drill bit type. Lamp bolts or threads are often referred to as "loops" since their threads are similar to a loop when drawn back. Commonly used for preload holes, lamp bolts allow the bits to be drawn back as far as necessary to allow for preload. Some examples of using lamp bits are for preloading small holes in wooden frames and for preloading hardware and other nuts and bolts.
