A chisel bit is a wood chisel that has been primarily used for cutting and shaping wood. In the middle ages, these chisels were exclusively used by craftsmen who had to make miniature works of art, primarily from wood. These chisels have their name because of the way they are held or gripped in the hand. Although, today a chisel can be used for any purpose, it is mostly used for cutting metal as well as wood.

Chisel bits can either be hand-held or hand-operated. Hand-held chisels are those chisels that can be gripped by the hand and used at the same time as a drill or a screw driver. While the hand-operated chisels are the ones that are manually operated and have a claw that helps in manipulating the chisel bit, both can be used at the same time. However, the latter kind is more preferred as the former one has a lot of limitations when it comes to its use.

Another important thing to note is that though a chisel can be used for any purposes, a chisel is primarily used for cutting. Therefore, if you intend to use a chisel for cutting something then you will need to have a good amount of experience with using such tools. It would be ideal if you are a professional carpenter before embarking on cutting something with it. On the other hand, if you are a beginner then it would be better if you do a small amount of research first before using a chisel on your project. This will ensure that you do not end up hurting yourself due to cutting mistakes.

For any do it your selfer the chisel bit is an essential tool to have in your tool box. A chisel bit can be used for many different types of woodworking projects and they come in a wide range of sizes so you are sure to have one to suit your needs. They are easy to use and require little work but getting the job done correctly can make all the difference. Before you start out with any project, it is recommended that you get some practice using your chisel bit as there are many techniques that you can use to get better at using these handy tools.

For most home jobs using a chisel is pretty straight forward. You simply chip away at the wood until you reach the desired thickness and then file the edge to seal the chips. One thing that you need to keep in mind is that when you use a chisel for any kind of woodworking task you need to be very careful that you do not chip off any of the wood behind the nails. This is very hard to clean up and could leave a permanent mark in the wood that will be impossible to remove. The best thing to do is take a piece of scrap wood that you can easily cut to size and then use this as a backer behind the chisel bit so that you can hold your nail in place.

If you want to do some really quick projects that require fast action then you can easily use a chisel without a backer. By driving the chisel bit into the wood with enough force to make a hole and then tapping the nail head into the open space you can create an open ended nail that looks very professional indeed. It is important that you make sure that the bit you drive is the right kind of chisel for the material you are working with because if you put a thin steel chisel into softwood then the result can be catastrophic. If you do accidentally chip a nail it is relatively easy to just remove the bit and start over, however if you damage the wood behind the nail then you may need to replace the entire nail.
